Lt. Col. (Retired) Gary Sterling Fowler, a beloved family man, accomplished military officer passed away peacefully at his residence on July 19, 2023. He was born in Hackensack, NJ on October 11, 1950, to Sterling Edwin Fowler and Elizabeth Fowler.
He dedicated over 24 years of his life to serving in the United States Army. He served as a helicopter pilot and demonstrated unwavering commitment during his time in the military. Notably, he played a crucial role during the Vietnam War, where he displayed exceptional bravery and was recognized with multiple valor decorations, including the Distinguished Flying Cross and Bronze Star.
Throughout his life he prioritized spending quality time with his family. He cherished these moments and created enduring memories with his loved ones. His caring nature and genuine love were evident in every interaction with his family members.
In addition to his military service and dedication to his family, Lt. Col. Fowler also had a passion for sports. Golfing on serene courses brought him peace and relaxation while drag racing provided an exhilarating experience that fueled his competitive spirit.
Prior to the Army he earned a bachelor’s degree that further enriched his knowledge and accomplishments.
Lt. Col. (Retired) Gary Sterling Fowler will always be remembered as a remarkable individual who displayed integrity, courage, and compassion throughout his life’s journey. His legacy lives on through the lives of those he leaves behind — his loving son Paul Sterling Fowler, daughter Channon K. Gard, and grandson Brennan Douglas.
