Joe was born to Clifton Joe Scott Sr., a World War II veteran, and Vadna Little on August 9, 1942, in Dallas, Texas. Years after the passing of Clifton Joe Scott Sr., Vadna married Joe Laye who loved and raised Joe as his own. Joe married his beloved wife, Maryann, on July 27, 1973, in McKinney, TX.
Joe graduated from Garland High School in 1960. He received a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from East Texas State University and a Master of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies from Abilene Christian University at Dallas. Joe was a member of St. John’s No. 51 Masonic Lodge in McKinney and was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason.
Joe served Collin County for 35 years. He began his career as a McKinney Police Officer, later becoming an Adult Probation officer, and finally serving as the Director of Juvenile Probation for 26 years. Upon his retirement, Joe, Maryann, and his new blue heeler companion “Blue” moved to Lone Oak, Texas to live out his dream of being a rancher – and that is precisely what he did. Joe’s favorite place on Earth was on his back porch, with Blue by his side, looking out over the pasture at his cows and the barn he and his father had built years ago.
Joe is survived by his beloved wife of 49 years, Maryann Scott, and his two sisters Marnetta Rose and Annetta Laye. He is survived by his children, Keith Scott and wife Kristi of Grapevine, TX, Kathy Brasher and husband Todd of Grapevine, TX, and Tynea Kelley and husband John of Waxahachie, TX. Joe and Maryann have 7 grandchildren: Magen Taylor, Murphi Dunn, Mitchell Griffin, Kyrbi Martinez, Kyli Duvall, Mace Brasher, and Maggie Brasher. They also have 8 great grandchildren: Bowen Taylor, Macklyn Taylor, Stella Dunn, James Dunn, Ivy Dunn, Brady Griffin, Cooper Griffin and Grace Billingsley.
Joe is preceded in death by his parents, Clifton Joe Scott Sr., Vadna Mae Laye, and Joe Laye, as well as his brother-in-law James Rose and his loyal companion, Blue.
