Edward Michael (Mike) Talley passed away September 19, 2021. Mike was born to Roy (Jake) and Jo Talley in Commerce, Texas, January 24, 1944. He attended Commerce Public Schools and East Texas State University, now Texas A&M Commerce. Mike laughed that he started first grade and graduated with a Master of Arts Degree all within six blocks of his home.

He joined the U.S. Navy and was a journalist aboard the USS Enterprise for three years, making three deployments to Vietnam. Following his stint in the Navy, he joined the Texas Department of Transportation’s Travel and Information Division as a writer, editing the Department’s travel literature. Mike received numerous awards for his work there. He retired from TxDOT in 2001.

Tired of staying at home on retirement, he went to work part-time at the Texas School for the Deaf, which lasted six years. He dearly loved working with the deaf community and greatly admired TSD’s staff and employees. He said, “Every day was a learning experience.”

He loved to play the piano and work in his yard and taking care of his loyal canine companions.

He is predeceased by his parents. He is survived by his devoted companion, Don Warner.

At Mike’s request, there will be no formal services. He urges everyone to have a drink with him and toast life.

Memorial donations can be made to the Texas School for the Deaf Foundation at 1101 South Congress Avenue, Austin, Texas 78704, or to Austin Pets Alive.
