Services for James Milton Fortenberry, 83, of Lone Oak, are scheduled for 2 p.m., Monday, February 14, 2022, at Lone Oak Baptist Church with Bro. Robert Cook and Bro. Mike Moss officiating.
Interment will follow in Hooker Cemetery, under the direction of Bartley Funeral Home, Lone Oak.
Mr. Fortenberry passed away February 11, 2022, at his home. James was born April 8, 1938, in Hunt County to Jim Hurst & Margaret Lorena Adair Fortenberry. He spent most of his life in Lone Oak where he was a member of Lone Oak Baptist Church and served as a Deacon. He also served in the U.S. Army, on the Cash Special Utility District Board, and on the Hooker Cemetery board. Mr. Fortenberry retired from the Greenville Police Department as Captain after 35 years of service. He enjoyed working with his cattle and horses and spending time with his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, and son-in-law, Wayne Blount.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Julia “Judy” Ross Fortenberry of Lone Oak; son, James Fortenberry, Jr. and wife Leah of Greenville; two daughters, Lynn Blount of Denison, and Julie Myers and husband Ray of Plano; three sisters, Mary Lee Dooley of Lone Oak, Betty Jo Moore and husband Charles of Lone Oak, and Margaret McMillan of Sachse; eight grandchildren, Jill Bergin and husband Chris, Anna Petty and husband Robert, Katie Blount, John Ross Myers, Drew Myers, Brooke Myers, Maggie Fortenberry, and Jenna Fortenberry; four great-grandchildren, Anderson, Madelyn, Tori, and Nick; and numerous other relatives and friends.
Pallbearers will be Gary Dooley, Terry Dooley, Mark Moore, Artie Cook, Kevin Hoefar, and Tommy Mobley.
Honorary pallbearers will be Charles Moore, Robert Stokes, Nathan Barrett, and law enforcement (current or retired).
