Gayle Shumate, 80, of Commerce, passed away peacefully at her home in Commerce on July 29, 2019.
She was born in Commerce, Texas on April 5, 1939, the daughter of John Monroe Shumate and Jewel Josie Hilliard Shumate. Ms. Shumate was a graduate of Commerce High School in the class of 1957. She went on to get her Bachelor’s Degree and teaching certificate from East Texas State University (now A&M Commerce) in 1961. She dedicated her life to teaching and served in the Grapevine/Colleyville ISD until her retirement. Following her retirement, she returned to Commerce to take up her residence during her retirement years. Gayle was an avid reader and made many trips to the library to keep herself supplied in reading materials. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Commerce.
Ms. Shumate is survived by and fondly remembered by many cherished friends. She was preceded in death by her parents: John and Jewel Shumate, and a sister Eleanor Clyde Shumate.
A special word of thanks goes out to all the workers at the Country Home Estates, and all of the dedicated caregivers who assisted Ms. Shumate for the past two years.
A graveside service will be held for her on Thursday, August 1, 2019, at 10:00 a.m. in the Rosemound Cemetery of Commerce. Reverend Sam Caldwell will officiate the service.
