December 7, 1937, in Whitewright, Texas, to Jesse Hubert and Lila Mae James, John spent his
early years in both Whitewright and the Dallas area. When he was in 7th grade, his family
relocated to Lubbock, where he completed his education.
John dedicated 24 years of his life to serving his country in the U.S. Army, achieving the
esteemed rank of Chief Warrant Officer 3 before retiring in 1982. His military journey was
marked by numerous accomplishments and commendations. During his service, he met his
wife, Michele of over 60 years. Together, they raised three children: Jon, Susan, and Judy.
John’s military career provided his family with a rich and diverse life, as they lived in various
locations, including Germany and several posts across the US and Asia. These experiences
instilled in his children a sense of adventure and an appreciation for different cultures.
Following his retirement from the Army, John continued to contribute his skills and expertise as
a civilian contractor for 15 years. He and Michele eventually decided to settle down in
Greenville, Texas to be closer to family.
John was an avid golfer and enjoyed the time spent playing with his brothers and friends. He
was on the starting basketball team in the inaugural year of Monterey High School in Lubbock,
Texas and kept in contact with the starting five teammates until their deaths.
John is survived by his loving family, including his brother Don James, his children Jon (and wife
Laura), Susan James-DeHaan (and wife Michelle), and Judy Armstrong-Bower (and husband
Kevin). He also leaves behind five grandchildren, Joseph, Robert, Jacob, Jeb, and Caroline; five
great-grandchildren, Cyson, Palmer, Harbin, Jolee and Lila, who brought him immeasurable
happiness. He will be deeply missed by numerous other family members, friends, and
colleagues whose lives he touched. John was preceded in death by his beloved wife Michele,
and his brother Fred James.
