John was born on November 17, 1932, in Waterloo, Iowa to Robert Edward Overton and Myrtle Amelia Utne. He grew up in California and graduated from San Dieguito High School in Encinitas, California. He attended and played football for Arizona State and then joined the U.S. Army and was stationed in New Mexico. After his Military service, he graduated from Valparaiso Technical School in Indiana. He married Sandy Coker on May 9, 1992, in San Antonio, Texas and they made their home in Greenville, Texas.

In 1961, he was hired by 3M company shortly after his graduation from technical school and he returned to California. In his time in the magnetic tape division of 3M, he was able to meet several recording personalities and international media producers. In the international tape division, he traveled throughout Europe and Southeast Asia and lived in Singapore for four years. After returning from Singapore, he lived in several states before settling in Texas. John loved everything Texas, including Sandy, country music and cowboy boots, which he wore just about everywhere. In 1994, after 33 years of faithful and dedicated service to 3M, he retired to enjoy life together with Sandy.

John loved to golf, play tennis in his younger years and was an avid reader. He loved spending time with his friends and family and enjoyed his mornings at Whataburger with friends. He truly never met a stranger and recently was so excited to be able to meet his first great grandbaby.
