Madelyn Elaine Smith, 78, of Greenville, passed away on October 3rd, 2021. Madelyn was born November 11, 1942 to Marcus and Elizabeth Burton, in the Hendrix Community, south of Caddo Mills, Texas.
Madelyn loved caring for her large family and was a wonderful wife, mother and homemaker. She sewed clothing for her children and canned food from the family garden. In addition to caring for her own children, she ran the Smith Family Home Day Care for many years, caring for those children who were dear to her as well. She also lovingly cared for her husband David through many health challenges. She adored the color red and singing at the Central Christian Church where she was a member.
Madelyn is survived by her son Laverl Smith; daughters: Tammie Smith, Elmyra Shirey and husband Stewart, Euphania Thomas, and Heather Coons and husband Jason; Grandchildren: Barrett Shirey and wife Kaelynn, Courtney Durham and husband Grant, Emily Shirey, Colton Smith, Hannah Smith, Brandi Gauna and husband Jon Ryan, Brittany Thomas, and Madelyn Oden; Great-grandchildren: Bellani Neff, Griffin Shirey, Pierce Shirey, Cash Thomas, Raelynn Durham, Vivienne Shirey and the Durham twins coming soon; and her sister Marcella Wright.
Madelyn is preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, David Laverl Smith Sr.; her parents; and brothers Howard Burton and Harrell Burton.
