Martha Joe Hackney, entered the gates of Heaven to be with her Lord and Savior at the age of 97 years and 10 months on March 30, 2024. She was a resident of Briarcliff Health Center in Greenville, Texas. Funeral services will be at 1:00 PM on Thursday, April 4, 2024, in the chapel of Coker-Mathews Funeral Home with Dr. James Ralson and Mr. Jackie Redwine. officiating. Burial will follow the service at Memoryland Memorial Park. Her family will receive visitors at the funeral home on Wednesday, April 3, 2024, from 5-7 PM.
Martha was born on May 24, 1926, in Whitewright, Texas to Austin Everett Claborn and Lona May (Owen) Claborn. Martha married Monroe Hackney, her husband of 53 years, on September 26, 1944, and was a member of the Kingston Baptist Church.
A long-time resident of Celeste, Texas, Martha worked many years at J.R. Love’s in Celeste, Farmers Coop in Greenville, and Olan Mills Photography, just to name a few. She also worked for The Bridal Shop in Greenville and the Highway 69 Mobile Home Sales business that she and Monroe owned and managed for many years. Martha loved family and friends get-togethers, whether it be the holidays, or cooking for some very big meals! She was a ”cook extraordinaire” and loved for everyone to come and share a meal with her and Monroe.
Martha absolutely ”loved” to travel and was always ready with a suitcase packed and set to go! She made numerous trips with her niece, Marilyn Hopewell, and they shared a love to watch the Dallas Mavericks and the Dallas Cowboys.
Martha is survived by her sons, James Hackney and wife Kathy of Rockwall; Jackie Hackney and wife, Vickie of Campbell; 5 grandchildren, Lance Hackney, and wife Christine; Ashley McCasland and husband Scott; Missena Hackney Clites; Amber Edgington; Melissa Duncan and husband Steven; 14 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Martha was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Monroe; sisters Opal Davis, Esta Brookins, and Lula Jinkins; brothers J.P. Claborn and Truman Claborn.
Pallbearers will be Lance Hackney, Steven Duncan, Scott McCasland, River Huff, Johnny Claborn and Bryon Fugitt. Honorary pallbearers will be James E. Claborn, Austin Langford and Jimmie McKenney.
